North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Director Kimberly Reynolds announced she is stepping down as Executive Director, effective April 1, 2019.

“Running NCDP has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I am proud to leave the party in a strong, stable position for the next generation of Democrats,” Reynolds said. “Between electing Governor Cooper, breaking the legislative supermajority, and encouraging more women to enter politics, I’m grateful to have worked with inspiring people to create a more progressive North Carolina. I will continue to be active in North Carolina Democratic politics and am excited to start a new chapter in my life.”

Reynolds served as the party’s Executive Director from 2015-2019, helping turn the party around after years of mismanagement and guide it to the strongest position it’s been in recent history. She oversaw day-to-day operations at the party, including implementing Break the Majority, a historic partnership between NCDP and Governor Cooper.

Under Reynolds’ leadership, the party rebounded, recruiting quality, diverse candidates in all 170 legislative districts in 2018 for the first time ever, achieving record fundraising success, and reasserting itself as a leader within the state and nationally.

Reynolds leadership resulted in North Carolina Democrats taking back the Governor’s mansion in 2016; electing progressive municipal leaders in 2017; sweeping statewide judicial contests, cementing control of the Supreme Court; and breaking both legislative supermajorities in 2018.

“Kimberly’s sense of humor, calm-under-pressure attitude, and dogged leadership have been instrumental in turning our party around and every North Carolina Democrat is indebted to her,” NCDP Chairman Wayne Goodwin said. “I am excited to see what my close friend will accomplish for Democrats across the state in her new endeavor.”

The party is conducting a state-wide and nation-wide search to find Reynold’s replacement. In the interim, Reynolds will serve as a senior advisor to the party to assist with the transition while launching her own company to foster the next generation of Democratic leaders.
