RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - North Carolinians gave a thumbs up to a $2 billion infrastructure bond referendum Tuesday with an overwhelming margin of voters voting "For" the package.

The bond passed, 66 to 34 percent. Its key champion, Gov. Pat McCrory, has assured voters the borrowing will not require a tax increase.

The package includes projects in 76 North Carolina counties.

Nearly half of the bond package is targeted to the UNC System. Another 17 percent will fund community colleges. Water and sewer projects, along with the National Guard and public safety area accounts for a combined 20 percent.

More than 2.3 million North Carolinians cast ballots in the primary election. That's 35.34 percent of registered voters.

Vote tallies can be found at ncsbe.gov.
