RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Republican Richard Burr easily cruised to victory in the U.S. Senate primary Tuesday, earning 61 percent of the vote and securing his party's nomination as he seeks another term in Washington, D.C.

Burr will face Demcrat Deborah Ross, who scored 62 percent of her party's primary vote. Ross is a former Wake County state legislator and head of the North Carolina ACLU.

Burr had the stiffest challenge. Wake County Dr. Greg Brannon, a Tea Party favorite, pulled 25 percent of the vote. Ross' closest challenger among four was Spring Lake Mayor Chris Rey, who garnered 16 percent of the vote.

The general election will also include a Libertarian Party candidate: Sean Haugh.

More than 2.3 million North Carolinians cast ballots in the primary election. That's 35.34 percent of registered voters.
