RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - He's facing nearly four years in prison for being a corrupt politician, but now former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon will spend the next two weeks under house arrest for illegally casting a vote in the midterm election.

Cannon, a Democrat, is a convicted felon. Convicted felons are barred from voting. Doing so is a felony.

Cannon told a judge he didn't know it was illegal to vote if you're a convicted felon.

The former mayor, a rising star in the Democratic Party, was convicted of corruption after he took bribes from undercover federal agents who were posing as people trying to get the then-mayor to fast-track their development projects.

Cannon reports to prison Nov. 18.
