RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - If President Obama follows through on his State of the Union speech promise of taking independent action on his priorities, he will doing so against the will of the American people.

A new poll from Rasmussen shows that likely voters want him to work with the U.S. Congress. The poll was taken the night before and the night of the president's address.

Just 27 percent of those polled believe it is better for the president to go around Congress if necessary to accomplish what he feels is important.

Not surprisingly, there is a partisan divide on the issue. A plurality of Democrats -- 49 percent -- told pollsters  it’s better for the president to go around Congress if necessary.

Nearly three of our Republicans -- 73 percent -- say it’s more important to stand for what it believes in.

Voters are almost evenly divided when asked whether the president or Congress more closely represents the will of the American people, according to Rasmussen.

Forty percent say Congress, 38 percent say the president, and 21 percent aren't sure.
