RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gov. Pat McCrory announced Tuesday that he will file an amicus brief to oppose the Obama administration's desire to force a Virginia school to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of the opposite biological sex.

The move comes after Attorney General Roy Cooper refused to weigh in on G. G. v. Gloucester County School Board.

Cooper's campaign for governor accused McCrory of being a bully. "Adolescence is hard enough without being bullied by an elected official. Next week, who knows who'll be the target of a governor whose only path to re-election is dividing North Carolina," said campaign spokesman Jamal Little on Twitter.

North Carolina is in the Fourth District, so if the Court of Appeals sides with the Obama administration in forcing the Virginia school to open opposite-sex bathrooms, the decision would be binding on North Carolina.

“North Carolina parents deserve certainty about who is entering their children’s bathrooms and locker rooms at our public schools and students must be confident that their privacy and well-being will be respected,” the governor said in a statement. "Transgender identity is a complex issue and is best handled with reason and compassion at the local level, instead of mandates being forced on the people by Washington and the Obama Administration.”
