Avangrid Renewables has been selected to develop North Carolina's first offshore wind farm. The company bid $9.1 million to lease a 122,405-acre offshore track off the coast of Kitty Hawk.
The lease is for one year, during which Avangrid can submit a Site Assessment Plan for approval. Once the plan is approved, Avangrid has four and a half years to submit a Construction and Operations Plan which would detail construction and operation of the project. After an environmental review is finished Avangrid would have a term of 25 years to construct and operate the wind farm.
The Triangle Business Journal reports nine energy companies had expressed interest in bidding on the site.
