RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Fed up with the continuing problem of federal employees who owe back taxes, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday passed a bill to try and curb the problem.

The Federal Employee Tax Accountability Act of 2015 requires federal job applicants to prove they don't owe back taxes to the federal government. It goes a step further as well, giving agencies the ability to terminate current employees who haven't paid Uncle Sam.

IRS data shows that $3.54 billion is owed in back taxes by more than 100,000 men and women employed in the federal workforce.

The amount has grown over the past year by $2.3 million.
