RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Years after its passage, North Carolina's voter I.D. law is the subject of disagreement in a federal court room in Winston-Salem.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder is presiding over the case.

The NC NAACP and allied progressive groups claim the the requirement to supply a photo I.D. to vote is discriminatory and a step backward in voting rights law.

Supports, including the Republican-led General Assembly, say it is a common-sense requirement to prevent voter fraud. The legislature revised the law to allow for those with "reasonable impediment" to vote without an I.D.

North Carolina's primary election is March 15.
