RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Nearly 20 Libertarian Party candidates have filed to run for office in the 2016 election cycle.

Among the races where Libertarians will have a candidate are Governor, Lt. Governor, and United States Senate.

The party's website notes that of the 18, 12 are running for state legislative seats.

Convention wisdom says Libertarians draw voters away from both major parties. Democrats who believe their party should be more liberal on social issues gravitate to Libertarians. Republicans who believe their party isn't fiscally conservative gravitate toward Libertarians as well.

To date, the most successful Libertarian Party candidate has been Mike Munger, who ran for governor in 2008, winning 2.85 percent of the vote. He snagged 121,584 votes according to the state Board of Elections.
