RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Durham legislator Mickey Michaux is urging Democrats to help fund a grassroots effort by the state party to fight back against what he terms "voter suppression."

In a fundraising email, Michaux signed on to the following message:

----------------------------
"I remember standing on the front lines during the civil rights movement besides many people who fought and died because we believed then, like we do now, that every single voter deserved fair and equal access to the ballot box.

We’ve won an important battle, but the war against voter suppression is not over.  According to an Elon University research report, over 90% of our college campuses had no Early Voting location on campus in 2014. That’s not acceptable, considering 18 counties had wait times over an hour in early and Election Day polls in 2014.

Voting is a fundamental right and we need to be increasing access to the polls, not eliminating precincts and voting locations. That’s why I’m working with the North Carolina Democratic Party to fund and develop the North Carolina Voting Rights Institute that will train and support activists like you across the state to stand up against voter suppression.

Will you donate $10 today so that we can begin building this program from the grassroots up? Together, we will be Victory Ready in 2016 and make sure our voters are not denied access to voting on election day.

Onward to Victory,

Representative Henry M. Michaux, Jr."
