RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The North Carolina Senate appears on its way to passing a bill that would put state Supreme Court justices to a retention vote. House Bill 222 would curb costly elections of justices, according to reporting by newsobserver.com.

Justices currently run campaigns just as any other candidate does. They are limited in what they can discuss on the campaign trail because they can't speak about cases they may come before the court.

The Senate voted Thursday 35 to 13. A final vote must still be taken.
