RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - State Democrats lit into Gov. Pat McCrory Tuesday over what they say is the governor's favoritism of the wealthy over the middle class.

“Gov. McCrory has truly raised taxes on the entire middle-class family," said party chairwoman Patsy Keever at a news conference.

Republicans lowered and flattened state income tax rates, giving all income groups a tax break. But Democrats say that because some exemptions and credits were eliminated in the tax reform, that amounts to a tax hike for low-income and middle-income households.

Democrats also criticized Republicans for their move on the gas tax. The tax was lowered on April 1, but the plan to stabilize transportation revenues means the tax will end up higher than it likely would have been come July when the old formula would have recalculated the tax.

Many Democrats voted for the gas tax changes: 15 in the House and eight in the Senate.
