RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - North Carolina readers of national political website politico.com woke up this weekend to a story that began this way: "Pat McCrory beamed."

The online publication talked with the governor while he was in the capital for a meeting of the National Governors Association. He told politico.com the news media has mischaracterized the Republican Party.

“Outside the beltline of Washington D.C., the Republican Party has been extremely strong," said McCrory to politico.com

The governor also discussed the party's 2016 presidential field.

“Governors know how to surround themselves with good teams and good advisers, and that’s where the experience of being governor I think is a good stepping-stone for the presidency,” he told politico.com.

Gov. McCrory returned to North Carolina on Sunday in order to attend a memorial service for legendary UNC Chapel Hill basketball coach Dean Smith, who passed away last week.
