RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The race for one of four seats on the North Carolina Supreme Court could end up in a recount, according to the State Board of Elections.

As of Wednesday morning, incumbent Justice Cheri Beasley led her challenger, attorney Mike Robinson, by roughly 3,000 votes. That very small margin meets the requirements that could trigger a recount in the statewide race if Robinson makes a formal request.

" North Carolina law provides for an automatic right to a recount in any statewide race when the margin is under 0.5% or 10,000 votes, whichever is lower," according to a statement from the board.

Beasley is a Democrat and Robinson is a Republican.

Chief Justice Mark Martin was elected to a full term on the high court, defeating his challenger, Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis.
