RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The conventional wisdom of pollsters said Kay Hagan would likely win a second term in the U.S. Senate. But by 10 p.m. Tuesday night, the "Hagan wins" scenario had failed to develop. And at 11:25 p.m., the Associated Press declared Thom Tillis the winner of North Carolina's U.S. Senate seat.

The State Board of Elections website shows Republican Tillis with 48.8 percent of the vote, to Hagan's 47.2 percent. Libertarian Sean Haugh drew 3.74 percent of the ballots cast.

The margin of the race sits at just shy of 50,000 votes.

On Wednesday morning, a smiling Tillis told Fox News he wants to help make the country "great again."

Tillis said Hagan was "gracious" when she called him to concede Tuesday night and that he wishes Hagan and her family the best.

When asked what comes next, Tillis said he plans to go home to Cornelius and spend some time with his wife and family, many of whom have gathered in North Carolina to be with him for Election Night.
