RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - With polls continuing to show Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan with a slight lead over Republican Thom Tillis, political watchers have their eyes set on this week's debate to see if Tillis can move the needle with just 30 days to go.

On Tuesday, Tillis and Hagan will face each other on the state in the second statewide televised debate of their race to snag the Senate seat now held by Hagan.

The debate will be moderated by ABC News correspondent George Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton administration political advisor. It is sponsored by the North Carolina  Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation.

An NBC/Marist poll released Sunday showed Hagan with 44 percent and Tillis with 40 percent. Libertarian Sean Haugh pulled 9 percent.

A recent Civitas Institute poll showed a tighter race. Hagan drew 41 percent of the vote and Tillis 40 percent. Libertarian  Sean Haugh registered at 4 percent.

The North Carolina Senate race is considered key to both major political parties. Democrats see the seat as key to retaining control of the chamber, while Republicans see it as a race that could secure their takeover.
