RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - If the election for seats in the U.S. Congress were held today, more likely voters would mark their ballots for Republicans than Democrats.

George Washington University's Battleground Poll shows Republicans pulling 43 percent of the congressional vote. Democrats garner 39 percent.

When "leaners" for both parties are factored in, Republicans maintain a four percentage point lead.

Twelve percent of likely voters say they are undecided.

The poll shows Democratic Party strength on the question of which party is "standing up for the middle class." By 12 points, likely voters pick Democrats (51 percent) over Republicans (39 percent).

Republicans, however, pull in front on which party would do a better job with the economy. Republicans garner 49 percent of voters on that question, with Democrats snagging 42 percent.

Republicans are also favored for dealing with "the federal budget and spending" by a 51 to 38 margin.
