RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - As the legal challenge to North Carolina's new photo I.D. law continues, polling data of U.S. likely voters shows overwhelming support for the requirement.

Rasmussen reported on Wednesday that its latest poll shows
"voters continue to strongly support voter ID laws and don't consider them discriminatory."

The telephone poll found that 74 percent of Likely U.S. Voters believe all voters should be required to prove their identity before being allowed to vote.

Nineteen percent disagree.

State polls have consistently shown North Carolinians support requiring an I.D. to vote.

Last week a federal judge ruled that North Carolina's election reform law is enforceable for the November election. A trial on the merits of the challenge will be held next year.

Critics say the reform package disenfranchises some voters. The photo I.D. requirement is just one provision of the law.
