RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The Democrat who hopes to replace Republican Howard Coble in the 5th District seat in Congress is stepping up her campaign with less than 100 days to go until Election Day.

Laura Fjeld, a former UNC official, is running against Republican Mark Walker, who won the GOP nomination in the July runoff against Phil Berger, Jr.

Fjeld sent the following email this week:

-----------------------
Dear Friend,

Today is the 49th anniversary of the signing of Medicare and Medicaid into law.  Medicare has proved to be a critically important program that our seniors rely on.

Over 50 million Americans are insured through Medicare, which covers preventive screenings as well as prescription drugs.  Without Medicare many seniors would lack basic insurance coverage, and be forced to choose between purchasing their medications and putting food on the table.

Some in Washington want to turn Medicare into a voucher program.  This would threaten nursing homes and long-term care, and shred the health care safety net.  I will always fight to protect Medicare, which is critical to the well-being of our seniors and their families.

Washington is broken and I am ready to roll up my sleeves to find solutions for the people of North Carolina.

Thanks for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Laura
