RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - More than 6 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in Tuesday's primary runoff, and that sets a record according to the state Board of Elections.
More than 105,000 North Carolinians chose a candidate Tuesday to decide 19 runoff contests across 37 counties -- turnout that tops any second primary over the past decade.
For the first time since 2006, no statewide race required a second primary.
One-stop early voting accounted for nearlyy one of four votes.
“Our counties have done an excellent job implementing a host of new voting procedures throughout the primary season,” said Executive Director Kim Westbrook Strach in a statement. “We congratulate the candidates on their hard-fought campaigns.”
Key results:
** 6th District Republican Congressional Runoff: Republican Mark Walker defeated fellow Republican Phil Berger Jr.
** 5th District Democratic Congressional Runoff: Democrat Josh Brannon defeated fellow Democrat Gardenia Henley
County boards of election will canvass results for the Second Primary on July 22.
