RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - In a sign of the importance both political parties are placing on the effort to control the U.S. Senate, Democrats and Republicans raised nearly the same amount of money in April.

Roll Call reports that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $6.3 million while its counterpart, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, announced a haul of just over $6 million for the April.

Democrats currently control the Senate and are in a defensive posture this year as red-state Democrats face an unpopular president and an unpopular health care overhaul. North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan is among that group.

To take over the Senate, Republicans must win six seats.

If the GOP wins five, the Senate would be deadlocked, effectively keeping control in the hands of Democrats. Vice President Biden would break any tie votes.
