RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Score one for the Democrats. Fundraising reports show the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee raised $6.6 million in January while its GOP counterpart, the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee hauled in $4.6 million.

But while the Republicans were outdistanced in the January cash game, they are well ahead of Democrats when it comes to debt. The Republican group has no debt. The Democratic group, on the other hand, carries $2.5 million in debt on its books.

Both parties are focusing intently on fall Senate races. Republican must pick up six seats to take control of the chamber and Democrats are playing defense, in part due to the public's negative views of the Affordable Care Act.

In North Carolina, Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan voted for ObamaCare and is facing advertising from outside groups that point out her continuing support of the unpopular law.
