RALEIGH, (AP) — The South Carolina Republican Party says it's ready to work north of the border to help deny President Barack Obama the 15 electoral votes in battleground North Carolina this fall.

Chairman Chad Connelly said this week the state party has pledged at least 1,000 volunteers to work in North Carolina to help register voters and perform get-out-the-vote efforts before Election Day. South Carolina Republicans back home also will be prepared to call North Carolina voters.

Obama won North Carolina in 2008 by about 14,000 votes. The state is considered competitive this year, and both sides already are marshaling their forces.

South Carolina is considered a probable victory for likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney. John McCain won South Carolina's popular vote by 9 percentage points over Obama four years ago.
