Governor Cooper Appoints New Members to State Boards and Commissions

RALEIGH: Today, Governor Roy Cooper announced 34 new appointments to state boards and commissions.

“As governor, I’m honored to serve North Carolina with these dedicated leaders,” said Gov. Cooper. “Each person will bring valuable guidance and expertise to these state boards and commissions.”

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Internship Council:

*     Dr. Susan McCracken of Boone as a UNC System representative and chair. McCracken works as the director of Career Development and Economic Engagement at Appalachian State University. She is a trustee for the North Carolina Humanities Council, currently serving as vice chair.

*     Paul Worley of Murphy as a community colleges representative. Worley is the director of Economic and Workforce Development for Tri-County Community College. Worley received his Master of Education from Western Carolina University.

*     Cha’ssem S. Anderson of Durham as a UNC System representative. Anderson is the Transportation Director for North Carolina Central University and previously worked as a logistics analyst for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., Inc.

*     Dr. Monty K. Hickman of Raleigh as a community colleges representative. Hickman is the associate director for Enrollment Management for the North Carolina Community College System Office. Hickman serves as an advisory committee member on the College Board of Historical Black College and University Initiative Conference and Training and the Howard Lee Institute’s Closing the Gap Summit.

*     Alan D. Briggs of West Jefferson as a former intern. Briggs was a former executive director for the North Carolina Association of Feeding America Food Banks. Briggs served as a member of the Wake County Open Space and Parks Advisory Council and as a trustee of the Natural Heritage Trust Fund. 

*     Dr. Patrick O. Madsen of Charlotte as a UNC System representative. Madsen is the director of the University Career Center at UNC-Charlotte. Madsen was selected as an international expert on career services and higher education for the Fulbright Specialist program.

*     Dr. Bryle H. Hatch of Greensboro as a former intern. Hatch works as the diversity manager for the School of Medicine at Duke University. Hatch is involved with the National Diversity Council, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Goodwill Industries Business Advisory Council.

*     Timothy H. Ozment of Rocky Mount as a representative from a college or university with less than 5,000 students. Ozment is the vice president of Human Services at North Carolina Wesleyan College. He is certified in Situational Leadership Training and is a member of the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.

*     Cynthia Frost of Mars Hill as a representative from a college or university with less than 5,000 students. Frost served as the Bonner Scholarship Program coordinator at Mars Hill University for the past 26 years.

*     E. Belton Moore of Red Springs as a former intern. Moore is a Park Scholar and an Economics and Political Science major at North Carolina State University. Moore previously interned with the Policy Office in the Governor’s Office, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the Swaminathan Research Foundation in India, and with Duke University. 

*     M. Elizabeth Goodwin of Charlotte as a private college or university representative. Goodwin currently works as the employer relations coordinator for the Wake Forest University School of Law. She is a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar and serves as the vice chair for Carolina Voices.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Inc.:

*     The Honorable Spence Broadhurst of Wilmington as a member with expertise in financial services. Broadhurst is the regional president of the eastern NC region for First National Bank. He was mayor of Wilmington from 2003 to 2006 and previously served as a member of the North Carolina A&T State University Board of Trustees and the Banking Commission.

*     Karen LeVert of Durham as a member with expertise in biotechnology. LeVert is the co-founder and CEO of Southeast TechInventures and Ag TechInventures. She serves as a board member for the NC School of Science and Math, NC Biotech Center, and as a board chair for the NC IDEA Foundation. Additionally, LeVert is a former recipient of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development’s North Carolina Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the North Carolina Gasoline and Oil Inspection Board:

*     Amy Jordan Dean of Cary as a member at-large. Dean is president of L.G. Jordan Oil Company. She serves as the southeast director for the National Propane Gas Association and is the state director for the NC Propane Gas Association.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the Edenton Historical Commission:

*     Elizabeth Denning Culpepper of Raleigh as a member at-large. Culpepper is a staff attorney for the North Carolina Utilities Commission. She served as commissioner for the Board of Adjustment for the Town of Rolesville.

*     Sadie Riddick of Edenton as a member at-large. Riddick is a retired teaching assistant and health care professional. She is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Edenton District Choir, and Lay Council Secretary.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission:

*     Kiana F. Rivers of Elizabeth City as a member at-large. Rivers is a student at the North Carolina Central University School of Law. Rivers interned with the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and attended a Cultural Immersion Summer Program in New Delhi, India.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Human Relations Commission:

*     Dr. Henry Clay Eddleman III of Hendersonville as the representative of the 11th Congressional District. Dr. Eddleman is a retired physician who served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps for six years. Eddleman worked at the VA Medical Center in Atlanta and at Emory University’s School of Medicine.

*     Angelo A. Mathay of Raleigh as a member at-large. Mathay works as an administrative judge for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In Washington, DC, he worked as an Associate Policy Analyst for the Migration Policy Institute and as a D.A.C.A. Law Fellow for the National Immigration Law Center.

*     Reginald L. Speight of Wilson as the Representative of the 1st Congressional District. Speight is the district director for the Office of Congressman G. K. Butterfield. He was President of the N.C. Community Action Association, Inc. and is now an honorary member of the Bertie County Poverty Commission.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the North Carolina Courts Commission:

*     Rev. Gregory B. Drumwright of Greensboro as a public member. Drumwright is the founder and executive director of the North Carolina Student Government Leadership Congress. He also serves as the senior pastor of the Citadel Church in Greensboro.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the Statewide Independent Living Council:

*     Eva Reynolds of Asheville as an individual with a disability. Reynolds is the associate director and employment network coordinator for DisAbility Partners.

*     Julia Sain of Charlotte as an individual with a disability. Sain has been the executive director at Disability Rights & Resources since 1997. She was the first person from North Carolina to be certified as an Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator through the University of Missouri.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board:

*     Tammy Whitten of Ayden as a marriage and family therapist. Whitten has been a solo practitioner as a marriage and family therapist since 2009. Her background includes families with children ages 0-5 in the Early Intervention Program and with individuals who had developmental disabilities.

*     Dr. Stacey Kolomer of Carolina Beach as a public member. Kolomer is the director of the School of Social Work at UNC-Wilmington. She serves on the Public Service and Outreach Committee at the university.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individuals to the North Carolina Brain Injury Advisory Council:

*     Jay Frederick of Clayton as a survivor of brain injury. Frederick worked as a technician for GRIFOLS in Clayton from 2009-2010. He is involved in the Habitat for Humanity Optimist Club and the Saint Francis Soup Kitchen. 

*     Murray Dunlap of Southern Pines as a survivor of brain injury. Dunlap is a writer, photographer, and motivational speaker who wrote the book Proof. Dunlap’s stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and the American Fiction Short Story award. 

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the Supplemental Retirement Board of Trustees:

*     Chevella Thomas of Durham as a retired state employee experienced in finance and investments. Thomas worked as a reconciliation/capital assets accountant at North Carolina Central University. She is the treasurer for the State Employees Association of North Carolina.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the Council for Women:

*     Candance D. Gingles of Wake Forest as a member at-large. Gingles is the director of Quality Engineering of Pfizer, Inc. She is affiliated with the RTP Chapter of Women in Bio and is co-chair of the Women’s Leadership Network Colleague Resource Group.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television Board of Trustees:

*     The Honorable Linda Garrou of Winston-Salem as a member at-large. Garrou served in the North Carolina State Senate and was chair of the Appropriations Committee. She is involved with Habitat for Humanity, the Senior Services of Winston-Salem and the Junior League of Winston-Salem. 

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators:

*     Lynn Haynes of Raleigh as a public member. Haynes worked as the director of Nursing Services at Mayview Convalescent Center. She served on the East Carolina University Advisory Board for the Department of Public Health as well as the N.C. Health Care Facilities Association Board of Directors.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board:

*     Nevius Toney of Aberdeen as a public member. Toney is a professor of management and business technology at Sandhills Community College. She also serves as the program coordinator of the business administration program at the community college.

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the Rockingham Community College Board of Trustees:

*     Tango B. Moore of Reidsville as a member at-large. Moore is the grants manager at the Reidsville Area Foundation, a private charitable organization. Moore is a member of the North Carolina Network of Grantmakers and Exponent Philanthropy. 

Gov. Cooper has appointed the following individual to the Stanly Community College Board of Trustees:

*     Daisy Washington of Badin as a member at-large. Washington worked as a counselor capacity with underprivileged children at Stanly Community College. She also served on the local Habitat for Humanity Board and the West Badin Alumni Association.
