A North Carolina bill would raise the minimum age to 21 for buying cigarettes and vaping material. Military members would be exempt from the restrictions should the bill become law.

The bill, HB 435, would fine stores for not posting signs notifying customers that 21 is the new age limit. It would also charge sales persons with a class 2 misdemeanor if they don’t ask for proof of age.

If passed, the minimum age would gradually increase during the next three years.
