Governor Roy Cooper has appointed Surf City Mayor Zander Guy as the new chairman of the N.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

The Raleigh News and Observer reports Guy served three months in prison in 1990 on a conviction for fraudulently billing clients of his insurance agency. Governor Jim Martin commuted the sentence and later pardoned him.

Guy has resigned as Surf City Mayor and has started his work on the ABC commission. The job pays $113,456 annually.

Guy has been mayor since 1999 and served as an ABC Commission member under Governor Bev Perdue. His previous public service included serving as mayor of Jacksonville.

Hr replaces former Lieutenant Governor Jim Gardner, who resigned last month. Gardner was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory.
