General Assembly Gains Gay Legislator PDF Print E-mail

The General Assembly has gained its second openly gay legislator. 
 
New Hanover and Brunswick county Democrats have selected Wilmington Attorney Deb Butler to replace Susi Hamilton who gave up her seat to serve as Secretary of Natural and Cultural resources. Butler will serve the remainder of Hamilton's term. 
 
In 2012, Butler lost a bid for the N.C. Senate.  
 
Chris Sgro of Guilford County was the other openly gay legislator. He was appointed to the District 50 seat to fill the term left vacant by the death of Ralph C. Johnson. 
 
Representative Cecil Brockman of High Point, has announced he is bisexual.
