Roy Cooper will be sworn in shortly after midnight on January 1 at the state capitol. The North Carolina constitution stipulates that the governor can take office on the first day of January. 

 

North Carolina Chief Justice Mark Martin will administer the oath of office. Cooper's family will be in attenadance as well as Secretary of State Elaine Marshall during a private swearing in ceremony. A media pool will cover the event. 

 

Cooper’s public inauguration ceremony is January 7.
