Public Comment Period Extended For African-American Monument at State Capitol Print

RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Four additional public comment events have been scheduled by the state in order to solicit feedback on an African-American monument to be constructed at the state Capitol in Raleigh. Four hearings have already taken place.

The monument will honor the achievements of North Carolina African-Americans. Gov. Pat McCrory recommended construction of the monument, a move endorsed by the North Carolina Historical Commission and the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission.

The new opportunities to comment will be held:
 
-- April 12 at St. Phillips African Moravian Church and Heritage Center in Old Salem, 911 South Church St., Winston-Salem

-- April 19 at the Asheville YMI Cultural Center, 39 Market St., Asheville

-- April 26 at St. Stephen AME Church – Sloan Chapel Annex, 501 Red Cross St., Wilmington

-- May 3 at the State Capitol, One E. Edenton  St., Raleigh
