RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gov. Pat McCrory has declared a State of Emergency, which allows for expedited power restoration in the wake of Wednesday's powerful, sometime tornadic, storms that pounded a huge portion of North Carolina, with the central area hit particularly hard.

The order waves vehicle weight and hours of service restrictions.

At one point Wednesday, more than 122,000 households were without power. By late afternoon, nearly 21,000 were facing a night of cold without heat and light. Most of those were in Forsyth, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Emergency officials continue to assess damage in Granville and Vance counties. From the assessments, state officials will determine if any counties qualify for federal or state assistance in recovery.
