RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The Boll Weevil assessment will stay the same for the third year in a row. The state agriculture department reports the board of the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation of North Carolina has set the 2016 boll weevil assessment at $1 per acre of cotton.

The fee is assessed so the state can continue to watch for infestation of the boll weevil, described as a "devastating pest" by the Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.

“Cotton production tapered back last year from record 2014 numbers, with an average yield of 686 pounds per acre. We wouldn’t have the acreage we have now without the considerable effort in the 1980s to eradicate boll weevils from the state,” said Troxler in a statement.

Monitoring consists of traps being installed and checked last summer until after harvest. More than 7,500 traps were placed and maintained last year.

Half of North Carolina counties grow cotton. The top three producers are Halifax, Northampton and Martin
