RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - He wielded considerable influence in North Carolina politics for years, but now Dana Cope is headed for prison.

The former head of the State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) was sentenced to 58 to 82 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to using more than half a million dollars of SEANC money on himself.

Cope paid $165,000 as part of a payment plan.

Said Cope to Donald Stephens: "I am a thief, and I need to do what is appropriate."

Cope's defense attorney described his client as a good man who had lost his way.
