RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The legecy of one of North Carolina's most  reprehensible public policies was in court Monday as heirs of victims of the state's eugenics law challenged the eligibility requirement that kept their loved one from qualifying for compensation.

More than 6,000 people were sterilized against their will as part of the state-sanctioned program that spanned four decades and ended in the 1970s.

The Republican-led General Assembly authorized a pool of $10 million for compensation to eugenics victims and some claims have been paid. To be eligible, the victim must have been alive on June 30, 2013, which coincides with passage of the legislation.

Attorneys for heirs of three victims who were not living on the date made their case to the North Carolina Court of Appeals that the date is arbitrary.
