RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The contributions to the state made by African-Americans will be commemorated in a new memorial to be placed on the grounds of the state  capitol in downtown Raleigh.

In a unanimous vote, the North Carolina Historical Commission endorsed the plan, as did Gov. Pat McCrory.

“This memorial will not only commemorate an important part of our history, it will inspire future generations to make history of their own that will contribute to the fabric of our great state," said the governor.

The first phase of implementation is to identify a location.

The planning committee will consist of three members of the North Carolina Historical Commission and three members of the African American Heritage Commission, and led by Historical Commission Chair Millie Barbee. The effort begins in earnest in January.

The design will be coordinated in part by the North Carolina Arts Council through a call-for-entries process.
