RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Putting people back to work sooner and preventing fraud. Those are the goals behind the state's uninsurance reform law, according to Gov. Pat McCrory, who signed the legislation Thursday.

Assistant Commerce Secretary Dale Folwell, who is responsible for the state's unemployment insurance program, was at the governor's side when Senate Bill 15 was signed at the Gaston County JobLink facility in Gastonia.

Those seeking unemployment benefits will now be required to make five job-seeking contacts per week while they are receiving benefits. The contacts can be made on the Internet and can be made on the same day.

The new law also allows for the garnishment of a delinquent employer’s credit card receipts. The measure will help identify employers who will misclassify employees as independent contractors to avoid paying unemployment tax. Additionally, the new law will help combat the recent trend of people setting up companies and filing for unemployment benefits for fictitious employees.
