RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The North Carolina State Highway Patrol will be joining forces with other state and local law enforcement agencies from across the country in an effort to prevent fatal collisions along I-40.

The I-40 Challenge campaign will focus special attention to the I-40 corridor and other interstate highways during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to the Highway Patrol.

Participating states include California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

The philosophy entitled “Vision Zero” is being used by all agencies on the state and local level.  The State Highway Patrol will be targeting several violations to include speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use, following too closely, and driving while impaired.

Increased patrols will be used during this initiative by placing a trooper every 20 miles throughout the 420 mile stretch of I-40 during the most heavily traveled periods of the holiday weekend.  The campaign will be conducted on Wednesday, November 26 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and again on Sunday, November 30 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Along with the I-40 Challenge, the State Highway Patrol will also focus on secondary roadways as a part of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  Checkpoints and saturation patrols will provide a high visibility of law enforcement in hopes to prevent motor vehicle collisions from occurring.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday season, the State Highway Patrol investigated 10 fatal collisions, 248 injury collisions, and 980 property damage collisions.
