RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - They were sterilized against their will by the State of North Carolina, but now the state is acknowledging the heinous nature of that action with  a financial payment.

This week the Office for Justice of Sterilization Victims gave 220 people their payments as an apology for their sterilization under the state's officie Eugenics program, which ran for decades and only officially ended in the 1970s.

The office has received nearly 800 claims from potential victims. The Industrial Commission verifies the claims. Those who are denied have a chance to provide more information during an appeals process.

The state believes that around 1,800 eugenics victims could still be living.
