RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Polar bear lovers are in for a treat. An expanded new exhibit area will open Thursday, with Gov. Pat McCrory and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary John Skvarla on hand to celebrate.

The exansion triples the space for polar bears. Zoo officials hope to expand the number of bears in the future. Patches now resides at the zoo.

The expansion cost $8.5 million. About 60 percent is from state funding and the rest is from private donations.

State-of-the-art educational graphics are part of the new area. The zoo hosts thousands of school kids each year.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m.
