RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - North Carolina flags will sit at half-staff Thursday in honor of Col. Richard W. Holden, Sr. of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Col. Holden was a 35-year veteran of the Highway Patrol before his retirement. He was also its first African-American commander.

He died on August 22 at the age of 67.

“Col. Holden led the North Carolina State Highway Patrol with a great amount of dedication and excellence,” said Gov. McCrory in a statement. “We will all remember and cherish his legacy. He set a fine example for future commanders with his leadership. Ann and I will be praying for his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Col. Holden joined the Highway Patrol as one of the original six African-American cadets to enter the Highway Patrol’s Basic School.  In 1999, he took the helm of the high-profile law enforcement agency and served with distinction in that position for five years.

Col. Holden is survived by his wife, daughter, son and eight siblings.
