RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Flue-cured tobacco growers are signaling their support for keeping issues of concern to farmers before state policymakers. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture reports that growers approved a new assessment to fund the efforts.

The assessment was approved on 88 percent of ballots in a mail-in referendum, according to the agency. A two-thirds majority was needed for approval. The money will collected when farmers sell their tobacco.

Growers approved an assessment of up to 15 cents per hundred pounds of flue-cured tobacco sold in North Carolina. However, the initial assessment will be 10 cents per hundred pounds.

“Until now, tobacco was one of the few commodities in our state that didn’t have a checkoff program to support its work,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler in a statement.

The assessment referendum was authorized last year by the General Assembly.
