RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - The state's effort to provide telepsychiatry services to rural citizens will soon be $1.5 million richer, thanks to a grant from the Duke Endowment.

The state's Health and Human Servcies department announced the grant to the Office of Rural Health and Community Care last week. The program operates out of East Carolina University.

"The additional resources will complement state funding allowing the telepsychiatry program to expand statewide," health and human services official Chris Collins said in a news release.  "This initiative addresses critical health professional shortages and creates unprecedented community access for individuals in rural and underserved areas to receive treatment for a mental health emergency."

The Duke Endowment grant will be disbursed in two installments, $800,000 in 2014 and $700,000 in 2015 and will be used to build upon the initial success of the telepsychiatry program.
