RALEIGH,  (AP) — The North Carolina House is backing new regulations for mopeds, requiring that the vehicles must be registered with the Division of Motor Vehicles just like motorcycles.

The bill passed Thursday initially required that moped users also carry insurance. But that mandate was removed in a committee. Starting next summer, mopeds would be required to have a license plate and title and owners must pay the associated fees.

The bill also directs a legislative committee to study whether more regulations are needed to keep mopeds safe.

Onslow County Republican Rep. Phillip Shepard, who is the bill's primary sponsor, hopes the study can shed more light on what other regulations might be needed.

The bill still would need Senate approval before going to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk for his requested signature.
