RALEIGH, (AP) — The North Carolina state agency that oversees services for hundreds of thousands of people with mental illness, substance abuse problems and developmental disabilities has a new leader after the previous director died in a bicycle accident last week.

Health and Human Services Secretary Al Delia announced Friday the deputy director of the state mental health division is now the acting director. Jim Jarrard has worked in the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services since 1994.

Steve Jordan died July 4 when police say his bicycle collided with a tractor trailer on a Raleigh highway. Jordan had been at the agency since 2010.

Delia said the department will miss Jordan's energy and passion for his work but added he's confident Jarrard will lead the division well.
