WINSTON-SALEM, (AP) — State Rep. Larry Womble is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with an accident last December in which a Winston-Salem man was killed.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the 70-year-old Forsyth County lawmaker turned himself in at the county magistrate's office Thursday. Womble arrived in a wheelchair and was advised of the charges. He was released on a promise to appear in court on July 18.

Winston-Salem police said the car Womble was driving on Dec. 2 crossed the center line of a street and collided head-on with a car driven by 54-year-old David Carmichael, who was killed. Police said Carmichael had a blood-alcohol content of 0.29.

Womble is in his ninth term in the General Assembly and has already announced he will not seek re-election.
