Governor Cooper appointed the Honorable William F. “Tripp” Helms and Rex Marvel, to district courts in Union and Mecklenburg counties respectively. 
 
“These judges have remarkable backgrounds and are leaders in their communities,” Gov. Cooper said. “I’m grateful for their continued service.” 
 
William F. “Tripp” Helms, of Monroe, NC, will serve as District Court Judge of District 20B, filling the vacant seat previously held by the Honorable Hunt Gwyn. Judge Helms previously served District 20D, which also serves Union County, as a District Court Judge and Clerk of Superior Court. Helms has served his community with positions on the Union County Board of Education, Monroe Rotary Club and the State Board of Election Compliance Commission on Accountability. Helms received his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, his Masters of Theological Studies from the Divinity School at Duke University and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Davidson College. 
 
Rex Marvel, of Charlotte, NC, will fill the vacant seat created by the retirement of the Honorable Ronald Chapman in District 26, which serves Mecklenburg County. Marvel has previously worked as an assistant public defender at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office, an adjunct professor at Central Piedmont Community College and as a law clerk at the Botswana Court of Appeal. Marvel has served on the Mecklenburg County Bar Community Service Board and the Center for Children’s board and volunteers with the North Carolina Bar Association teaching high schoolers about the legal system. Marvel received his Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University.
