Raleigh, NC - Legislation advanced that would keep parts of North Carolina off limits to wind-energy operations in order to keep flight training areas clear for North Carolina-based military operations.

The proposed areas covered by the bill covers much of central and eastern North Carolina where military aircraft fly. North Carolina has the fourth largest military population in the country, supporting 578,000 jobs, a majority of which are in the private sector.

The bill implements regulatory hurdles before a company could build a wind farm with 200-foot tall turbines. The state military and health departments would be required to provide assessments to the Department of Environmental Quality which issues permitting sites for wind farms.

A Perquimans County wind farm wouldn't be affected if the current legislation became law, but proposed facilities between Edenton and Hertford and another in Tyrrell County could not be built.
