RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Fourteen thousand acres of public and private land is impacting by a fire at Whipping Creek on the Hyde and Dare county line. As of Thursday, the state's agriculture department reported it 15 percent contained.

Affected public land includes parcels owned by the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission gamelands, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge lands, and U.S. Air Force lands and property owned by The Nature Conservancy. Private land is also affected.

Because of the fire, 30 miles of U.S. 64 in that area is closed due to smoke and issues with power lines. Smoke is hindering efforts to accurately map the fire and flame front.

Both personnel and equipment are engaged:

-- 14 Type 6 engines (pickup trucks with water tanks and pumps)
-- 11 fire dozers
-- one helicopter
-- three single-engine air tankers (SEAT)\
-- one patrol plane
-- one lead plane
-- two water tenders.
