RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - A spreadsheet that contained personal data about Medicaid recipients was accidently sent by state health officials to the Granville County Health Department without proper encryption to safeguard the data from a breach.

A state Health and Human Services Department says the agency doesn't believe data was breached, but cannot guarantee that and is therefore notifying individuals whose information was in the spreadsheet. Those whose names and personal information were transmitted are being offered a number to call for fraud alert.

The agency verified that the intended recipients at the county health department received the email, and that the HHS employee who sent the email recognized right away the error in not encrypting it first.
