RALEIGH, (SGRToday.com) - Gaston County magistrate Bill Stevenson has resigned his office to follow his religious belief that marriage rather than perform same-sex marriages as now required by law.

The Gaston Gazette reports that Stevenson left October 16. He reportedly joins six other magistrates who have also resigned in support of their faith.

A federal court ruled recently that North Carolina's legal definition of marriage -- between one man and woman only -- is unconstititional.

North Carolina voters passed the traditonal marriage amendment to the state constititution in May 2012.

Polls show voters continue to support traditional marriage, despite the ruling.
